| IP Telephony Overview
Computer and Telephony technology has been merging since the introduction of CTI. The resulting products and services enhance both the Telephony and computer market and also create new applications. An example of existing CTI technologies and applications include intelligent PBX's (Private Branch Exchange), ACDs (Automatic Call Distribution Centers), fax servers, IVR (Interactive Voice Response), voice processing, and messaging. Most businesses today use service or products based on IP technology. Call centers, reservation networks, credit card authorizations, customer support lines and the facilities depend on these technologies to the point where downtime of even a minute can result in significant loss of revenues. The next emerging opportunity with IP (Internet Protocol) will be integration with CTI, creating IP Telephony solutions that will change the way we all communicate.

What is IP Telephony?
IP Telephony is any Telephony application that can be enabled across a data network via the Internet protocol. IP Telephony is a set of many standards that enables voice, data and video to co-exist over IP-Based LANs, WANs, Frame Relay networks, ATM backbones and the Internet. These applications include PC to PC communications, PC to Phone communications and Phone to Phone communications. The best way to look at IP Telephony is the convergence of circuit-switched networks (the Public Switched Telephone Network or PSTN) with packet switched networks (the Internet, Intranets, LANs, WANs and other network types). IP Telephony has enhanced existing communications and has started to create new applications and revenue opportunities.
